Alpha Suit Outfitting Columbus’ Young Professionals

A well-fitting suit is iconic and timeless, but “Off the rack clothing is made for everybody so it doesn’t fit anybody,” so says the owner of Alpha Suit, a new custom men’s clothier. Sean McKee brings over 20 years of experience serving high-end clients to the venture that aims to make custom suits more affordable for a younger audience.

Thus far much of McKee’s career has been spent outfitting a higher-end clientele with expensive, custom suits. It’s a busy executive type that’s done well and can afford to have someone come to them. However, the market began to change. Clients were retiring and McKee noticed an influx of young professionals in Central Ohio.

As a way to replenish his customer base, and make custom closing more accessible to a younger crowd, McKee formed Alpha Suit. He’s using a concept that’s gaining popularity and made the business a primarily pop-up experience.

“With the pop up events, everybody comes to me,” McKee says. It takes the legwork out of the equation for him (versus several individual visits for his other clients) which allows him to offer the suits at a more affordable price point.AlphaSuit1

Alpha Suit offers five pop-up type experiences to get men outfitted in custom suits and shirts. First, there’s Alpha Suit hosted pop-up events. For example, McKee held an event at Bar 23 in the Short North where customers came to get measured and pick out their fabrics, and then made a return trip a month later to pick up their suits.

“People can have their own events too,” McKee notes. This represent options two and three. Offices where many of the men wear suits, like financial institutions, will host McKee. Or a group of guys looking to get suited up can hold their own event.

Alpha Suit rounds out their offerings with one-on-one consultations and wedding party fittings.

Custom suits run $479 to $750 with shirts ranging between $79 and $125. McKee calls these prices comparable to getting a nice suit at a big box store, but it’s not going to fit the same.

McKee takes over 30 measurements when fitting suits and shirts.

“It’s going to fit like a glove,” he says.

Alpha Suit had a soft launch about six months ago, but is now ready to really get the ball rolling. McKee sees a big market for affordable suits in Columbus because of the number of young professionals coming out of universities like OSU and Capital.
