Columbus Chamber cbuzz: Joe Deloss, Head Fryer of Hot Chicken Takeover

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In the case of Hot Chicken Takeover, the chicken didn’t come first, the business model did.

“I’m new to the chicken game, but I’ve been involved in this idea of integrating workforce development into a job environment, into a for-profit business model, and have had a couple of experiences with that,” says Joe DeLoss, head fryer of Hot Chicken Takeover and first to take the mike on the new cbuzz podcast. “Once we figured out the chicken, it was about integrating this idea of how can we leverage this business for a bigger level of impact in the community?”

It’s been a whirlwind of an experience for HCT. DeLoss and his wife first discovered the spicy Southern staple in November of 2013, and just shy of two years later, HCT has gone from living room test, to pop-up, to permanent part of the North Market.

During the podcast, DeLoss takes listeners back to before there was chicken, but still a strong desire to help others. He was studying at Capital University and volunteering, but he realized, “I could have served soup all day, but the line would still be there,” DeLoss says. That’s when he discovered social entrepreneurship. Listen here to hear more about DeLoss’s ventures in social entrepreneurship – and how he prefers his hot chicken.
