A Columbus College of Art & Design illustration alumna was chosen by Huntington to create a painting reflective of the bank’s new “Welcome” brand positioning.
The painting −by Kirsten Bowen, a 1989 graduate− was featured at the seventh annual CCAD fashion show in May and used to create a scarf for Huntington’s recently-launched colleague career apparel line, which is now available to all bank employees.
“Converting a pattern from a painting into a garment is a challenging yet exciting undertaking,” says Bowen. “Having previously worked in textile design, however, this was a great opportunity to channel my past experience. And I am honored to have my artistic expression become a part of Huntington’s brand.”
Bowen is known for creating vibrant murals for local businesses and individual buyers, making her a logical choice for Huntington. However, it’s the bank’s chief communications officer, Elizabeth Heller Allen, who made the collaboration happen.
Allen became an instant admirer of Bowen’s work after viewing her pieces at a CCAD biannual art sale. When the idea for an artistic brand component came up, she immediately recommended Bowen to help Huntington transform its “Welcome” brand into a work of art.
“We wanted to tap into local talent to help Huntington’s ‘Welcome’ brand come alive through our new apparel program,” says Allen. “Not only did we have the privilege to work with a local small business owner and the opportunity to showcase a Columbus institution, but we’re already receiving great feedback from our colleagues about adding a fun and stylish scarf to our new apparel line.”
Stephanie Hightower, vice president of institutional advancement at CCAD, says the project is a classic integration of an entrepreneurial alumna connecting with business, which is mutually beneficial for all involved.
From 1989 to 1992, Bowen lived in New York City, where she worked as a carpet designer before transitioning to textile design. Since moving back to Ohio, Bowen has trained as a faux finisher, and painted murals and wall designs. Her work has been featured in the New Albany Parade of Homes, at least four BIA Parade of Homes, and at least two Designers Showcases.
Bowen’s “Welcome” painting is currently displayed on the executive floor of the Huntington headquarters building at 41 S. High St. in Columbus.
