Under the leadership of the 15th president of The Ohio State University, Dr. Michael V. Drake has led the educational institution to many records – a record number of applicants, a record persistence rate of approximately 95 percent, record graduation rates, increasing grades and test scores, and a student body that is more economically, racially and ethnically diverse.

They’re great accomplishments – but only a starting point on a course Drake has charted for continual excellence. During the podcast, which features Drake’s conversation with Chamber President & CEO Don DePerro from the organization’s CEO Insights series, he talks more about his drive to make the university better everyday.

During the interview, DePerro asks Drake about OSU’s role in the business community and preparing students for the workforce of the future.

Staying connected helps OSU fulfill its mission as a land-grant university to educate the people of the community and lift the quality of life in the community. Drake explains how the university continually revises its curriculum to give students the tools and flexibility they need to be successful, preparing them for the positions of the future.

Learning at OSU extends outside the classroom, with strong relationships and partnerships with the business community that see thousands of students in internship positions. Drake remembers the value of hands-on experience during his student days.

“We try to have many opportunities for our students to learn while doing, and at the same time, be doing something useful while they are learning,” he says.

During the podcast, Drake also discusses the role a major institution like OSU plays on a local to international stage. Critically important to the Central Ohio community, OSU also has the clout to affect higher education policies and practices across the nation.
