The Columbus Chamber of Commerce launches a new event series one week from today to foster discussion around government relations issues that impact local businesses.
The quarterly event series will kick off Tuesday, September 27 with an in-depth look at the Ohio minimum wage.
“With a possible statewide ballot initiative in 2018 to raise the minimum wage, and murmurs from other local jurisdictions across Ohio, the Columbus Chamber wants to make sure our members are equipped with the right information,” says VP of Government Relations Holly Nagle. “We want to ensure members understand the potential impacts of mandated wage increases so that they can make smart business decisions and feel empowered to talk to their elected officials about the issue.”
Christie Angel, director of government relations and public affairs at Calfee Strategic Solutions will moderate a panel of experts educating attendees on the historical and modern significance of the minimum wage, and discussing changes posed to businesses and the economy with a mandated wage increase.
Panelists include:
- Joe Rosato, Director of Government Affairs, Ohio Restaurant Association
- Bruce Weinberg, Professor of Economics and Public Administration, The Ohio State University
- Michael C. Griffaton, Of Counsel, Vorys Sater Seymour and Pease LLP (specializes in labor and employment law, and is also credited with drafting Ohio’s minimum wage statute)
The Government Spotlight Series is an expansion of the Chamber’s current Government Roundtable series.
“We created the Government Spotlight to illuminate issues of broad significance to the region’s business community, and to engage and educate members on why they should care about them,” Nagle says.
The events will cover a wide range of policy-related topics that impact all businesses, “But will serve as a resource and benefit for our members, the vast majority of which are small and mid-sized businesses,” Nagle explains.
The first Columbus Chamber Government Spotlight Event will be held on Tuesday, September 27 from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. at The Athletic Club of Columbus, 136 E. Broad St. Tickets are $25 for Columbus Chamber members and $40 for non-members.
