In a national ranking by commercial real estate platform CommercialCafé, Columbus ranked 18th in its list of the 20 best U.S. cities for startups.

The ranking was based on 13 metrics — including tech employment growth, millennial population growth, startup survival rate, Kickstarter success, tech education and coworking cost.

Columbus ranked first overall in housing affordability, third in startup survival rate and 10th in millennial population percentage. According to CommercialCafé: average rent in Columbus accounts for 14 percent of the median income for architecture, computer, engineering and mathematical occupations; 65 percent of Columbus startups with up to four employees were active past their first year in 2018; and millennials made up 28 percent of the total city population.

Columbus was the only city in Ohio to make the list, and one of only three Midwestern cities named, joined by Kansas City and Minneapolis.
