From a young age, Mark Bryan, associate and senior interior designer at M+A Architects thought, “There was nothing better in my mind than being able to shape spaces that could affect people.”

During the latest episode of the Columbus Chamber cbuzz podcast, Bryan discusses the multitude of ways spaces impact individuals, in ways both expected and unexpected. He also gives a peek into the philosophy of M+A Architects that has earned the firm a ranking as one of the top in the nation.

“Our mission is enriching lives through innovative design, and what that really means is we are trying to push past just having a great project; we want to make sure that our projects affect the community in a positive fashion,” Bryan says. “We want to make sure that ultimately the users who are going to be in those space have a better outcome or a better experience through those spaces.”

M+A works across a variety of sectors, from healthcare and higher education, to workplace and multi-family residential, seamlessly handling “everything from the walls in” Bryan says. M+A employs architects to an experiential design team to create solutions for their clients.

Bryan delves into some of the white papers the firm’s research and development team has published. They’ve taken an in-depth look at topics like senior living facilities and the correct lighting levels to reduce fall risks, to the future of higher education and distance learning, and even emerging trends like co-living. It’s just three examples of using design to solve problems and impact lives.

M+A has also taken an interest in using designed spaces to tackle stress. Bryan discusses their recently installed respite room where employees can relax and take a break.

Using their own experience and research, M+A has started educating clients about stress and respite spaces for employees. They’ve yet to have a client say they aren’t interested, and their research team is working to create different prototypes for different sectors.
