Columbus Metropolitan Club Hosting Local Crowdfunding Panel on April 5th

If you’re thinking about launching a crowdfunding campaign in 2016, then you’ll want to make sure you implement the best practices shared at an upcoming panel hosted by the Columbus Metropolitan Club on April 5th. “Crowdfunding Boom or Bust?” is the name of the discussion, which aims to shed some light on why crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo work so well for some types of startup businesses, and not at all for others.

“There’s a misconception that if you build it they will come — which is actually very opposite from the truth,” said Susan Post, Staff Writer at The Metropreneur, and moderator of the Crowfunding panel. “We’ll talk about why that is.”

The panel of experts that Post will moderate include Kate Djupe of The Commissary, Ryan McManus of ContentVia, and Chris Hawker of Trident Design. All three have hosted successful local crowdfunding campaigns, and each offer a unique perspective on their experiences.

“The first question asked of the panel will be very interesting,” stated Post. “We’re asking the panel about the type of people who are using crowdfunding and don’t really understand it, and whether or not they have diminished the value of the platform for those who have actually thought it out and would otherwise benefit from it.”

Post conducted in-depth research on local for-profit crowdfunding efforts in 2015, which she compiled into a multi-part report here at The Metropreneur. The results show that 68 percent of local crowdfunding campaigns failed last year for startups, and the success rate varied based on the stage of the business.

While the CMC luncheon can only cover so much ground in an hour, Post hopes that the information discussed will be valuable to attendees and can lead to more research and ongoing discussion.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” she said.

“Crowdfunding Boom or Bust?” takes place on Tuesday, April 5th from Noon to 1:15 p.m. at The Boat House at Confluence Park.
