How does a business take a routine errand and change into a fun, philanthropic venture for its clients?
Located in the The Shops on Lane Avenue, Nurtur the Salon aims to embody the mission and essence of Aveda everyday since its founding in 2006 by owner Patrick Thompson. In fact, the salon has created multiple philanthropic programs to engage their stylists and clients, as well as nonprofits in the community.
“Nutur is exactly what an Aveda salon should be, from the recycled materials included in the construction of the salon to our philanthropy work to the added-value services offered in the salon that bring our guests into balance,” says Brandi Evans, marketing coordinator for Nutur the Salon.
Nurtur’s philanthropy began with Tip for a Cause, a program in which employees contribute a portion of their tips to a different charity each month. The program also encourages salon and spa guests to tip the organization during their checkout.
In 2011, Tip for a Cause supported multiple charities, including The Sierra Club Central Ohio Chapter, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Homeless Families Foundation, Friends of the Shelter, and the Central Ohio Diabetes Association.
Nurtur’s most successful fundraising is in support of the Sierra Club Central Ohio Chapter. Since it opened, the salon and spa has raised more than $35,000 for the organization. One of its largest fundraisers is Beauty for the Earth, which allows guests to donate a minimum of $20 for salon services instead of paying the regular price.
Nurtur repeats the event in October, calling it Beauty for a Cure, to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Last fall, it raised $2,887 for the foundation through the event and Tips for a Cause.
“Everyone, from the Nurtur team members to our guests to the people in our community, must have a passion for the cause we’re supporting because passion ignites action,” Evans says. “Our team members are more likely to donate or talk to their guests about donating or attending an event if they’re passionate and excited about it.”
The Earth Jam fashion benefit is a partnership between Nurtur the Salon and the Aveda Institute Columbus. The event is a fashion and hair show and includes live and silent auctions. It was originally held at the Aveda Institute Columbus location on Neil Avenue, but moved to the LC, which has allowed the show to expand to its potential. Last year, Earth Jam raised $30,000 for Sierra Club’s Clean Water campaign.
To businesses looking to be philanthropic, Evans says, “You can’t just wing philanthropy work. You need to have a clear and defined plan and job descriptions dedicated to it. You really do need to allocate a fair percentage of your budget to your philanthropic work and stick to it. And, most importantly, you need passion and communication!”
