The SBB unveils nominees for Local Business Awards

The Small Business Beanstalk yesterday announced the nominees for its first-ever Local Business Awards.

Sixty-nine businesses throughout Central Ohio have been nominated in 13 categories. Award winners will be determined by votes cast at TheSBB.com/events/local-business-awards and the SBB’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/thesbb through Sept. 17. Also, a live voting booth will be set up at the Independents’ Day festival on Sept. 17.

“Central Ohio is home to dedicated entrepreneurs and incredible local businesses that keep our economies and communities strong,” says Wolf Starr, CEO of the SBB. “The SBB Local Business Awards are a way to recognize the accomplishments of local business leaders who are doing great things, even during tough economic times, and to showcase the wide-range of local business options available to consumers in our area.”

Starr says dozens of community leaders will be on hand to present the awards, and the ceremony will include performances from local bands, including Andy Shaw, The Spruce Campbells, Phantods, G.Finesse and The N.S., The Town Monster, Wet Darlings, and Karate Coyote.

“For several weeks we accepted write in nominations online for all the categories,” Starr says.

Hundreds of businesses were nominated; the finalists are the ones with the most nominations. The award categories were suggested by SBB members and Facebook fans.

Winners will be announced during the SBB Awards Gala on Sept. 21 at the Bluestone in downtown Columbus. Don’t let the word “gala” fool you, though.

“We are in no way going to take this event too seriously,” Starr says. “This is a big party. We want everyone to have fun and we will drive a lot of business to our members when distributing the 1,800 [gala] tickets in many different ways.”

To date, the SBB has partnered with more than 400 companies (that employ more than 3,500 Central Ohio residents) to grow small businesses and connect consumers with local goods and services through the use of its free neighborhood discount card.
