ABOUT THE THEME- “Flow”
It’s no secret that our modern-day world is full of distractions: Glowing screens. Notifications. 24-hour news cycles. At times, it can feel exhausting to try and get things done with all the bells and whistles competing for your attention.
In his book, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, psychologist and researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi theorizes that people are happiest when they are in a state of flow. Flow is the experience of completely immersing yourself in a singular pursuit and effectively applying your skills to it.
When you’re in flow, your awareness of time momentarily dissolves. You’re in a temporary, but energizing state that helps you make progress with the task in front of you. So, how can you rise above the noise and get into flow?
First, quiet your mind and take a deep breath. Then, pick one task (yes, just one) and set clear goals for it. Move or put away any distractions around you. Lastly, take your first action. Whether it’s writing your first sentence, drawing your first stroke, or playing your first note — dive in.
Activate your flow and let it carry you where you need to go.
Our Mexico City chapter chose this month’s exploration of and David Espinosa illustrated the theme.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS – Kaleem and Tiffany Musa
Kaleem is passionate about empowerment, critical thinking, Hip-Hop culture, and technology. Prior to entering the technology industry as a software engineer, Kaleem worked in various sectors, but mainly the Arts, as both an artist and an organizer.
He is co-founder of various initiatives, including Creative Control Fest, TedxKingLincolnBronzeville, and BlackTech614. His work intersects community building, the arts, technology and how these things can work together to better the human condition.
A seasoned writer and editor Tiffany Williams lives in her birthplace of Columbus, OH where she was raised by her mother and father, in the middle of three brothers. Tiffany was the first in her family to earn a college degree after graduating from Otterbein College in 2005 with a B.A. in Journalism.
Now married and a mother of five children, including stepmother of two, Tiffany’s writing most recently unpacks the intersections of womanhood and motherhood, in her blog, Modern Blended Life.
Tiffany’s writing is a soft but poignant perspective of navigating space as a Black woman. She explores her world while living in a gentrified zip code, newly participates in therapy, is actively practicing self-care, raising purposeful children and fostering a loving and intentional marriage relationship. A career background in operations and non-profit programming, Tiffany is working to complete the manuscript of her first novel.
ABOUT THE TALK
In their talk titled, “No Method to the Madness”, Kaleem and Tiffany will be sharing with us how they flow in their daily lives as a blended family, creatives, entrepreneurs—the ups, downs, struggles, and victories.
