Coworking concept Spaces will occupy three floors of a nine-story building that’s under construction at 711 N. High St. in the Short North. The 42,000 square feet of space represent the brand’s first office in the state and the single-largest coworking concept in Columbus

It’s the latest in an exponentially growing number of shared office spaces staking claim throughout Central Ohio from Downtown to the suburbs. In 2017 a dozen new coworking or other studio spaces were either opened or announced, followed by the launch of Versa Coworking in early 2018.

Originating in Amsterdam, Spaces has 100 locations open or in the works across the globe. Specific details on the Columbus location are yet to be announced, but the brand’s other locations boast 24/7 access, tailored rental terms and membership options for individuals and corporations.

To learn more about Spaces’ approach to coworking and their expansion to Columbus, The Metropreneur recently spoke with Michael Berretta, Vice President Network Development, Americas at Spaces.

[Metropreneur] Describe Spaces’ approach to coworking. What makes it unique among coworking facilities?

Michael Berretta: Spaces offers an inspiring work environment for established professionals and growing businesses. Not only does the brand offer office space, but the memberships and meeting rooms help people think and work with like-minded individuals. The overall goal of Spaces is to offer a work hub where a company can evolve and build relationships. Our brand also hosts unique events in our centers such as TED-Style talks to allow members to share ideas.

[M] What attracted Spaces to the Columbus market, and more specifically the Short North?

MB: With small businesses in Short North thriving, Spaces saw the perfect opportunity to come into the market and provide flexible work spaces for business as their companies grow.

[M] Outside of physical space, what amenities does Spaces offer to its tenants?

MB: Both business and networking events will be hosted at Spaces Columbus Short North for members and community residents. At Spaces we believe networking events further encourage connection and collaboration between colleagues. Spaces recently became the first-ever global co-working partner for TEDx to allow communities, organizations and individuals to seek conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences at their centers.

[M] Is there a specific curation of tenants Spaces looks to attract? (i.e. entrepreneurs, small businesses, etc.)

MB: Spaces offers something for every type of business. Small start-up companies can rent dedicated desks and larger, established businesses can regularly rent meeting rooms for large board meetings. Spaces focuses on gaining the attention of businesses looking for unique networking opportunities and community building to grow.

[M] There has been an exponential growth in coworking facilities over the last few years, especially in Columbus. Why are markets seeing more coworking spaces? How does it correlate to big-picture trends in the way people work?

MB: Flexible space is a growing industry and we’re seeing demand for it all over the world in large and mid-size cities and even suburbs. Our company’s motto is “success breeds more success,” so we choose to enter markets where there is innovation happening in industries of all kinds. All industries, from large corporations and Fortune 500 companies, to start-ups and entrepreneurs from companies of all sizes, are choosing to operate out of co-working spaces like ours rather than get locked into a lease. Not only does flexible co-working space allow businesses to grow and shrink seamlessly, it also provides a built-in community of like-minded colleagues. Spaces strategic planning is to create a network of locations so that business and individuals can take advantage of the synergy of a global framework of locations to work, share ideas and grow in.

The building at 711 N. High St. is scheduled for completion in October 2018. For more information, visit
