Following the recent announcement of a line of higher ABV kombuchas, Luna Kombucha is headed from a Clintonville basement to a new 5,0000 square-foot facility on Sinclair Road.
“We can get much larger equipment, make much larger batches and lower our costs overall,” says Founder Michael Iannarino. Since the last time The Metropreneur checked in with Luna Kombucha, the business has seen much growth. Three flavors have expanded to 11, with unique combos like peach lemongrass, guava jasmine and flamin’ mango, not to mention the three new high ABV products – a gluten-free ginger beer, a black raspberry IPA and a sweet blueberry-lavender.
Iannarino says they are “adding accounts like crazy” especially because of the new products. And, Luna is consulting with a brewer on additional products to be added post-move.
“Kombucha itself has been growing nationally over the last eight to 10 years,” he says. Luna Kombucha has greatly expanded their Central Ohio reach and is found everywhere from Short North Pint House to Giant Eagles to a number of other bars and restaurants across the city. The beverage is stating to have a state-wide presence with availability in Dayton and Athens as well.
Luna Kombuch is also an approved vendor at Whole Foods in the Midwest region, representing 13 states, sixty plus stores, and an opportunity for regional growth. Iannarino hopes to be a player in those states in the next five to seven years.
While his main concern is adding new and more efficient equipment to further facilitate their growth, the new location will also feature a tap room and retail space.
“It’s not the most ideal location for a tap room, but we are going to put a tap room in there,” Iannarino says. He’s aiming for a mid-December move and a late winter/early spring opening for the tap room. The room will feature a rotating selection of Luna’s kombuchas.
Until this point, Iannarino has been the only investor in the venture. With the move, “I think for the first time, we are going to be looking for outside investors,” he says.
