Nurtur Salon continues to grow, opens second location

At Nurtur Salon, a haircut comes with a shoulder and scalp massage, makeup touch-up, and either a hand-and-arm massage or a mini facial.

Nurtur’s Upper Arlington location, which opened six years ago at 1581 W. Lane Ave., has shampoo beds instead of shampoo bowls. At its Grandview location, which opened on Oct. 24 at 1325 Grandview Ave., clients can choose from a variety of beverages, including several custom blended teas.

“We pride ourselves on adding an extra special value to the service experience,” says Patrick Thompson, owner and president of Nurtur Salon.

“We also pride ourselves on inviting our guests to experience a warm, welcoming atmosphere where they can feel comfortable and not judged, which is not the case at many salons,” he adds.

Nurtur uses plant-based Aveda products at both locations.

“We like that Aveda uses natural and organically-sourced ingredients in their products,” he says. “Our mission also aligns with the Aveda mission to give back to society and set an example for environmental leadership and responsible business practices.”

In fact, Nurtur’s commitment to sustainability is one reason why it opened its Grandview location in an existing salon; less construction was needed and fewer materials were thrown out.

Thompson’s fondness for Grandview itself was also a factor in the expansion.

“Grandview’s culture aligns with our mission to stay local and be involved in the community,” he says, adding that it’s home to many privately owned small businesses, such as Stauf’s Coffee Roasters, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, and Spagio, that create a unique locale.

Nurtur Grandview is a 1,500-square- foot, eight-chair salon. As there’s no room for a spa, that location only offers eyebrow waxing and hair and makeup services.

As if a second salon wasn’t enough, Nurtur’s inclusion in Salon Today’s list of the top 200 salons in North America (in the Growth category) for the last three years also suggests the business is flourishing.

For those looking to open their own salon, Thompson has some practical advice: put together a solid business plan that includes extensive cash flow projections and hire a top-notch lawyer, accountant, architect, and construction manager.

However, a salon is all about people, he says, so make sure to employ the best.

“I am proud to say we do,” he adds. “I am proud of our team.”
