    Upcoming Small Business Events for October

    It’s a busy week and weekend for small business events. Whether it’s the Mayor’s annual expo, a discussion on a hot topic in the startup world, or a creative showcase with a side of startup advice, keep reading for more information on this week’s events.

    Mayor’ Small Business Conference and Expo

    The 12th Annual Mayor’s Small Business Conference and Expo will be held Oct. 8 & 9 and the Greater Columbus Convention Center and will feature ample networking opportunities with panel discussions and breakout sessions focusing on small business trends and topics.

    Crowdfunding: The next wave or a new ocean?

    The NAIOP Central Ohio Chapter presents Crowdfunding: The next wave or a new ocean? on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Columbus Idea Foundry from 4:oo – 6:00 p.m. Crowdfunding is becoming an increasingly popular means to access capital and validate a startup ideas. A panel of local and regional experts, including Alex Bandar of the CIF and Elliot Schneier and Ben Miller of Fundable, will discuss the future of crowdfunding for businesses.

    Columbus Mini Maker Faire

    The Columbus Mini Maker Faire will be held at COSI on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Presented in partnership by the Columbus Idea Foundry and COSI, the event will feature a number of exhibits and demonstrations from members of the CIF. Demonstrations will include laser engraving, woodturning, 3D printing, blacksmithing as well as showcases from the likes of HAPI and Aries Gate.

    The Maker Faire also features programming aimed at startups. New this year is Guppy Tank. Individuals will be able to pitch their latest idea to a panel of local business and startup experts with special guests from NCT Ventures, Drive Capital, TechColumbus and Ohio The State University. The panel and the audience will ask questions and give advice on how to advance an idea to the next level.

    The Startup Help Desk will also offer small businesses and entrepreneurs an opportunity to ask a panel of startup professionals for help with their toughest questions. Attendees will get an insider’s view of what it takes to be an entrepreneur and the kinds of challenges and opportunities they face every day.
