Social On-The-Go: Managing A Mobile Social Presence

There’s no question that managing the social media presence of a business is full-time work. Not to mention work that keeps you strapped to a computer. So it’s difficult to constantly stay connected to your audience when you’re also trying to grow your business. Sometimes you just can’t be there and you don’t have the help you need to back you up.

Fortunately, we live in a world where our mobile phones allow us to have a little computer in our pocket. These pocket computers are the key to your social in-between time. Even though you might have to be away from your computer back at the office, there are plenty of mobile options to keep you connected with the marketing of your brand through social media.

Hootsuite If you’re not familiar with this platform, I suggest you get quickly acquainted. Hootsuite is a fantastic social media dashboard where you can manage the platforms you’re using to market your business socially, such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Foursquare, MySpace, and a few others.

You can also schedule updates to go out anytime you need so you don’t have to worry about being at the computer all day long tweeting manually to keep the attention of your audience. Having the ability to check these networks in one place is a huge timesaver for business owners, and the best part is that you can download a mobile app to continue monitoring right from your smartphone.

Hootsuite is available for free in the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry app stores. Log on to, set up your accounts and then continue tracking social activity on your phone when you’re not in the office.

Buffer App− This is currently my most frequently used dashboard to manage my social presence. I like the ability to schedule updates with Hootsuite, but I don’t like that I have to pick the date and time for every single one. I know that there is a certain window of time where my audience is most engaged with my brand. Therefore, I just want a bunch of tweets and Facebook updates to go into a buffer and go out automatically based on the pre-determined schedule I have arranged.

For instance, if you notice that the best time to post to you audience on Twitter is between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, you can arrange all the time slots that you want tweets to go out during that time and all you have to do is send content to your buffer. Each tweet you send will go in the next time slot for publishing.

How can you take advantage of this on your mobile device? Well when you get that email from Buffer App letting you know that your buffer is running low, you can just search for some content on your mobile browser (whether it’s news or articles from some related blogs) and email the link and content of the tweet to your Buffer App account. An update will be created and you will have content flowing consistently without a need to rush back to your computer. Find out more about Buffer and its mobile email option here.

Tweetdeck Tweetdeck is a great application, particularly on a mobile device. It’s a nice way to have a lot of monitoring options, like Hootsuite offers, but with an even more aesthetically pleasing presentation. What’s so nice about it is you can easily swipe between columns such as mentions, direct messages, or any search you might be running. (I’m always running a search for my website’s URL in case I miss someone who tweeted about an article I wrote.)

Other applications usually have you going in and out of windows to take a good look at everything. And I think we all know how slow that can be on an already overloaded smartphone. Tweetdeck doesn’t allow management of as many social networks as Hootsuite, but you might find that all you need is Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare− in which case Tweetdeck would be a great option for you.

Don’t let the time commitment of social media scare you away. With mobile options and the ability to automate what you don’t need to do personally, it’s easy to have a great social presence with a time commitment that suits your schedule.
