On Jan. 18, the Substance blog announced a search for local artisans and designers in need of a booth and a studio, respectively. Two such spaces, dubbed “Substance Lofts,” are available in the shop’s mezzanine and management is looking for tenants.

“The creative process for fashion design is something we are passionate about and seeing that on display helps raise the awareness of our clientele about the time and skill that is dedicated to produce garments and accessories,” says Christina Getachew, founder and CEO of Substance.

“For the past five years that we’ve been open, we’ve focused on ways to put the design process front and center,” she continues. “We have always made product in our own design studio that is open for public viewing in the storefront. Giving space to more local artists expands on that while at the same time increasing the offering of locally made fashion in our store.  It’s good for us, the artists, and it’s good for the community.”

The retail studio, about 120 square feet, is ideal for customer fittings, Getachew says. Rent for the space is $150 per month.

The booth, a shelved space suited to smaller items like candles and bath and beauty products, is available for $25 per month.

“As we are a small storefront, we’re looking for equally small, independent designers, such as a one-woman company that’s currently bursting out of a corner of her dining room, to incubate that will be able to work hands on creating items in, or for, a small startup space,” Getachew says. “As we are a small company, we’re also looking for those tenants to craft a product that is a seamless blend with our current customer.”

Interested parties should email the Substance staff, at [email protected], images of their wares and/or links to their company websites by Feb. 15.

“We would like information about who the artist is and what he or she loves to do,” Getachew says.

The goal is to have the lofts filled by March 1.

Two spaces near the ones currently up for grabs have been occupied by Elizabeth Ashleigh Designs and C&E, a vintage jewelry vendor, for less than a month.

Updates about the Substance Lofts will be posted at ShopSubstance.com/lofts as they are available.
