Despite a year that could have meant the end of a startup before it even got to officially launch its product, the DACA Time team remains confident there will be a place for them in 2018 and beyond.
Named for an executive order implemented by President Obama in 2012, DACA provided temporary protection for undocumented immigrants that came to the U.S. as children. On Tuesday, September 5, 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the recension of DACA – not even two weeks after the startup had won $40,000 in funding as part of the SEA Change Accelerator.
DACA Time aimed to create the TurboTax equivalent for the lengthy, legally-laden application that some 800,000 dreamers have had to physically mail to the government. For a $60 fee, DACA applicants could use the startup’s software to fill out the form step by step, responding to questions with more basic language. The software would also auto-populate the same information that was required in multiple places on the application.
If Congress finds a solution, DACA may no longer be the entity, but founders Brook Kohn and Nathali Bertran, a DACA recipient herself, imagine there will still be a need for a software that collects information and matches it to an application.
