The APTE Summit is intended to educate, impassion and empower individuals to alleviate poverty through market-based solutions on a local and global scale. From conception to execution, it is a student-organized and student-run undertaking that is free and open to the public.

This year’s summit, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., focuses on how attendees can start using their resources, networks, and talents to do something that creates meaningful, sustainable change.

“We want attendees to leave APTE inspired by the spark of social entrepreneurship, or at least inspired to apply the ideas of social business to their lives and their careers,” says its co-organizer David Miracle.

More than 10 people will be speaking during the summit, including Jeffrey Spector, chief of staff to Melinda Gates at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

“We believe that APTE is all about building a community of like-minded people, and we thought that having a keynote speaker this year might detract from that,” Miracle says. “Even though there isn’t anyone that we’ve labeled a keynote, we think it’s a pretty solid lineup.”

Other speakers include Shivani Siroya, CEO and founder of InVenture; Michael Miller, director of Poverty Cure; and Joe DeLoss, founder of Nobul and founder of Freshbox Catering.

Last year, more than 1,000 people attended the summit and this year organizers are shooting for 1,500.

With the summit’s Innovation Marketplace, organizers hope to provide student attendees with additional channels of action.

Miracle describes it as a “dynamic career fair” that provides mission-aligned research, volunteer, internship, networking and involvement opportunities centered around social change.

The Innovation Marketplace will be open from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Gateway Film Center at 1550 N. High St.
