Black History Month Celebration and Poindexter Awards

Immerse yourself in the celebration of the arts! Friday, February 16, Columbus City Council will host its annual Black History Month Celebration and Poindexter Award Ceremony at 10:00am the Historic Lincoln Theatre. The event will celebrate this year’s theme with musical, dance, and spoken word performances as well as an award ceremony honoring those who’ve left their artistic mark on Columbus.

Black History Month is fast approaching and Columbus City Council will once again honor community leaders and members who’ve greatly impacted our City. Nominations are now open for the Columbus City Council Poindexter Awards, named in recognition of James Preston Poindexter, the former clergyman, abolitionist, civil rights activist, and political pioneer who was elected as the first Black Columbus City Councilmember in 1880. The 2024 national Black History Month theme is, “African Americans and the Arts.”

“Columbus’ Black community has a rich history in the arts,” said Council President Shannon G. Hardin. “This year’s Poindexter Awards are an opportunity to honor those who used their artistry to build the canvas of today while also honoring those who are creating the canvas of tomorrow.”

This year’s awards will focus on the arts, including:
    • Visual: Architecture, ceramics, drawing, filmmaking, painting, photography, sculpting
