    First Look: 1487 Brewery

1487 Brewery is pouring its first beers at its new Plain City taproom, 7620 Industrial Pkwy.

The German-style brewery is entering its soft opening with a lineup of eight of its own beers, including a Kölsch, Altbier, Hefeweizen, Raspberry Weiss and more. It’s a small preview of what’s to come.

1487 is loaded with 25 taps that will serve a lineup of house and guest beers. That includes three nitro taps – one for beer and two for cold brew coffee – as well as a unique tap Owner Ben King hasn’t seen outside of Denver, CO or Germany. Come the new year, 1487 will feature a slow-pour pilsner. And by slow pour, that’s three to five minutes to pour one beer.

“It breaks down the proteins in the beer when you pour and it makes it super rich and super velvety on the mouth feel and then the head actually forms the consistency of whipped cream during the pour,” King says.

A full bar menu, including wine and liquor, as well as a food menu with scratch-made eats beyond normal bar food fare are on the way.

King says they’ll be in a soft opening phase for the next few weeks until the kitchen starts serving food. As they continue hiring and ramping up kitchen staff, Chef John Abner is finalizing the last bits of the menu.

The menu will feature more traditional American fare like burgers and wings, in addition to more traditional German eats like sausages, pretzels and beer cheese, and a specialty not oft found in Columbus, Schweinehaxe – a roasted and deep-fried pork knuckle.

On the lighter side, Abner says there will be salmon and a few vegan dishes. He plans to gauge demand on those items and expand those options on the menu accordingly.

Long-term, weekly specials and a Sunday brunch are also on the menu.

Currently, 1487 Brewery is open from 3 – 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Those hours will eventually expand to include lunch and dinner service as plans fall into place.
